Abstract

824,253. Anodic etching of and electrodeposition of metals on titanium and its alloys. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. July 16, 1956 [July 29, 1955], No. 21949/55. Class 41. A method of electro-plating titanium or titanium alloys includes the steps of anodically etching the part to be plated in a substantially non-aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid and pure ethylene glycol, swilling with acetone or other non-aqueous solvent to remove the etching solution and applying a nickel strike by electro-plating. In an example a titanium part is immersed in an anodic etching bath of hydrofluoric acid and ethylene glycol, lead cathodes being used. Upon removal from the etching bath the part is immediately transferred into a swilling bath of acetone. The part is connected to the negative pole of a source of electrical supply while still in the swilling bath, and is then withdrawn from this bath and immediately immersed in an electro-plating bath containing a lead anode already connected to the positive pole of the electrical source and consisting of a solution of nickel-sulphate and sulphuric acid. Upon removal from this bath the part is immediately placed in a swilling bath of acetone; and thereafter the part may be electro-plated first with copper and then with silver from cyanide baths.
