Abstract
591,834. Electrodepositing indium. AMERICAN METAL CO., Ltd. March 1, 1945, No. 5140. Convention date, March 15, 1944. [Class 41] Indium is electrodeposited on copper, brass, aluminium, silver, lead, steel and cadmium, and especially for making lead-silver-steel bearings, from an electrolyte containing an indium salt of a stable per-acid together with a quantity of the per-acid in the free state. The preferred per-acid is perchloric acid, but periodic, persulphuric, permanganic, perchromic and permolybdic acids are also suitable, and glue may be added for extra-smooth deposits. The indium content may be 20-60 g.p.l., and free perchloric acid 1-75 g.p.l., the current-density is 10-55 amps/ft.<2>, voltage 0.6-2.5, and temperature 75-130‹ F. To keep the strength within limits at room temperature, a pH value of 0.5-1.5 should be maintained. The anodes may be of substantially-pure indium or inert material. The indium perchlorate may be produced by either (1) dissolving indium oxide or hydroxide, in perchloric acid, or (2) dissolving copper oxide or other lower oxide in the acid and then adding metallic indium to cement out the copper, or (3) electrolysis of a solution of the acid, using an indium anode and a small cathode until the proper strength of solution for electro-deposition of indium is obtained. Three specific examples are described.
