Abstract

The surface of aluminium or an aluminium base alloy is treated to render it receptive to the electrodeposition thereon of another metal, by immersing it in a solution consisting of at least 50 per cent by weight of nitric acid and the remainder hydrogen peroxide, or a substance yielding hydrogen peroxide, such as sodium perborate, and water. The hydrogen peroxide content may be 5 per cent. An aluminium article may first be degreased in trichlorethylene, cleaned in sodium triphosphate as many times as necessary to remove surface irregularities, and immersed in the nitric acid-hydrogen peroxide solution at room temperature. It may then be coated with zinc in an alkaline plating bath, electroplated with copper and then electroplated with silver; finally, if desired, rhodium may be electrodeposited thereon.
