Abstract

486,752. Anodic coating of tin and tin alloys. CAMPBELL, SIR J., MCNAUGHTAN, D. J., and KERR, R. Nov. 9, 1936, No. 3756. [Class 41] A black or blue-black film is formed on the surface of tin or alloys consisting mainly of tin, e.g. pewter, by anodic oxidation in a concentrated solution producing trivalent and/or quadrivalent ions at a temperature of above 80‹ C. and preferably about 90‹ C. Examples of trivalent ions which may be used are phosphate, aluminium, chromic, and citrate ions, and of quadrivalent ions pyrophosphate and ferrocyanide. Lower limits of concentration are given. A solution which may be used contains 100 gms. of Na2HPO4 12H2O and 20 cc. of phosphoric acid per litre, the current density being preferably 30- 40 amps. per sq. ft. The oxide film formed may be protected by a layer of lacquer, wax, &c. Reference is made to the treatment of tinplate for use in making containers for beer, other beverages, acid fruits and certain vegetables and meats. Specification 416,608 is referred to.
