Abstract
498,626. Electrolytic surface treatment of magnesium and its alloys. BUZZARD, R. W. Nov. 23, 1937, No. 32193. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1936. [Class 41] Protective coatings are formed on magnesium and magnesium alloys by anodic treatment in a solution containing one or more oxidizing agents or ions derived from water-soluble compounds of the group consisting of chromates, dichromates, oxalic acid, acetic acid, nitrates, permanganates and chlorates in presence of one or more water-soluble salts of the group consisting of sulphates, fluorides, phosphates, borates and molybdates, the pH being on the acid side. The salts used are preferably those of sodium, potassium and ammonium. The above-mentioned constituents may be present in concentrations of 1 per cent up to saturation point, the temperature may range from 20- 80 C. and the current density from 1-100 amps. per sq. ft. The pH is preferably between 2 and 5. Chromate or dichromate may be used in conjunction with manganese sulphate, chromium sulphate or monosodium phosphate.
