Abstract

939,136. Chromium plated steel. FUJI IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. Dec. 7, 1961, No. 43936/61. Class 41. Steel sheet or strip is given an electroplate of chromium of 0.005 to 0.1 Á thick which is free from hydrogen embrittlement by using an electrolyte containing 100 to 250 g. perlitic of CrO 3 and using a constant current density of 20 to 60 A.S. decimetre for 1 to 20 secs., at 30‹ to 60‹ C. Preferably, H 2 SO 4 is added at the rate of 1% of the concentration of CrO 3 . The coating may be formed in a series of plating steps with intervening baths of H 2 SO 4 of increasing concentration, the first bath containing 0.1 to 2% of the acid. The plated strip or sheet may then be coated with a lacquer or paint, or with a vegetable oil, or treated with chromic acid or alkali chromate. The finished sheet is suitable for the canning industry. In a continuously operating apparatus, steel strip passes off a roll 8, pinch rollers 10, welding unit 11, to a pre-cleaning tank 1 containing NaOH and Na 2 SiO 3 , a tank 2 containing an acid pickle, each having spray washers 13, to a plating tank 3 operating under the given conditions. After plating, the strip is given treatment with chromic acid solution in a tank 4 on each side of which is a washing tank 14. The strip then passes through a drier 7 with an oiling coat at 5, if required. The oiling coat may be replaced by a lacquer coating stage, and then a high frequency baking stage. Tables are given of tests comparing the chromium plated steel with tin plate.
