Abstract

Iron or steel surfaces contaminated with rust and/or scale are treated by applying thereto a preparation containing manganese acetate, phosphoric acid and, if desired, iron phosphate, which will react with the rust and/or scale to form an iron acetate gel containing finely-divided iron and manganese phosphates, followed by drying the surface to form an adherent film of iron and manganese phosphates. The preparation may consist of iron powder, phosphoric acid, water and manganese acetate; the iron powder may be replaced by an equivalent quantity of iron phosphate and the manganese acetate may be replaced by an equivalent quantity of acetic acid and manganese carbonate or other manganese salt which will react with acetic acid to form manganese acetate.
