Abstract
1,222,182. Treating glass. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 3933/69. Heading C1M. A glass article which contains at least 5 wt. per cent of alkali metal oxide is contacted at a temperature between the strain point of the glass and a temperature 150‹ C. below the strain point with a molten salt which contains monovalent cations larger than the alkali metal ions in the glass (when the melt contains alkali metal ions the glass must contain at least 5 wt. per cent Al 2 O 3 ), such that a compressive stress profile is created, there being a compressive stress maximum of at least 20 kg./sq. mm. at a depth of at least 35 Á, this maximum being at least 10 kg./sq. mm. more than the surface compressive stress. Preferably the compressive stress maximum is not more than 100 Á from the surface, and preferably the compressive stress region extends to a depth of not more than 300 Á. In an example a glass sheet of composition (weight per cent). SiO 2 64À5; Al 2 O 3 27.4; Li 2 O 8.1 was treated at 505-655‹ C. with a melt consisting of equimolar amounts of Na 2 SO 4 and ZnSO 4 . Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 966,733.
