Abstract

A sodium alumino-silicate glass article is strengthened by (1) heating the article to from 25 C. below the transformation range to within the transformation range for 4 hours and (ii) exchanging K+ for Na+ ions by contacting a surface with K+ ions at 50-150 below the strain point of the glass long enough for a compression layer 5 mm. deep to be formed in the surface. The glass consists essentially in wt. per cent of: Na 2 O, 10-20 Al 2 O 3 10-25 SiO 2 50-65. Other compatible oxides not exceeding 10 wt. per cent individually or 20% in total may be present, e.g. K 2 O, alkaline earth oxides e.g. MgO or CaO, ZrO 2 , PbO, P 2 O 5 , TiO 2 or B 2 O 3 . Not more than 1% Li 2 O should be present. Up to 1% As 2 O 3 may be added as fining agent. The strain points of these glasses are 550-600 C. and the annealing, points 600-650 C. The transformation range lies between these two points, and the heating in this range is preferably at 5-35 above the strain point, in an inert atmosphere, e.g. air. The K+ ions may be applied as a molten KNO 3 bath. Specification 966,733 is referred to.
