Abstract
1346747 Ion-exchange strengthening of glass SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 21 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 34225/72 Heading C1M Glass containing alkali metal ions is strengthened by ion exchange in two successive stages in baths containing alkali metal ions of greater average size than those in the glass, the first of which is carried out at a temperature above the upper annealing point (glass viscosity = 10<SP>13</SP> poises) and the second below the strain point (viscosity = 10<SP>14.5</SP> poises), the average size of the alkali metal ions in the second bath being greater than that in the first. The first bath may be a molten mixture of Na 2 SO 4 and KCl, while the second may be molten KNO 3 . The first treatment is preferably at a temperature at which the glass has a viscosity of 10<SP>11</SP>-10<SP>13</SP> poises (e.g. 600‹ C.), and the second at a glass viscosity of 10<SP>14.5</SP>-10<SP>16</SP> poises.
