Abstract
Glass is strengthened by subjecting it to the action of (a) at least one etching agent dissolved in at least one molten salt; and (b) a melt containing Ag+ ions, in which at least 90% of the cations are Na+ ions. Step (b) may be performed at the same time as or after step (a). Etching agents are defined as substances that can remove a thin uniform layer from the glass without giving rise to H+ ions or other ions having greater affinity for the glass than cations in the melt-system in which the agent is dissolved. Etching agents include fluorides and borofluorides of sodium and potassium, ammonium fluorosulphonate and silver fluoride. In step (b) there is 0.5-5.0% Ag, added either as the metal or as a salt, e.g. AgNO3. The useful temperature of (a), or (a) and (b) jointly, is 250 DEG -450 DEG C.; that of (b) is 200 DEG -400 DEG C. The glass may be tempered and strengthened by preheating to just below its softening point, e.g. to 600 DEG -700 DEG C. and then performing steps (a) and (b). After treatment the glass may be cooled, washed and dried.
