Abstract

A strengthened glass-ceramic article has an inner portion containing a parent crystal phase and an outer portion compressively stressed with respect to the inner portion, having a different crystal phase formed in situ having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the parent crystal phase. The parent phase may be MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 containing an exchangeable Mg ion; nepheline containing an exchangeable Na ion or b -quartz containing an exchangeable Mg ion. The glass-ceramic article is contacted with Li+ -containing material to effect exchange of Li+ with an ion within the surface layer of the article, at 450-1050 DEG C. The Li+ -containing material may be a molten bath of Li salts with Na or K salts. A further ion exchange-step may be performed by exposing the Li+ -treated article surface to material containing ions larger than Li+, e.g. a molten salt bath containing Na+ or K+. Heat-treatment schedules for devitrifying the original shaped glass bodies are exemplified.
