Abstract

PURPOSE: To simply obtain high strength glass by spraying a treating liq., on the surface of glass of a specified temp., contg. a salt of an alkali metal having an ionic radius larger than that of an alkali metal contained in a surface layer of the glass to form a compressive stress layer in the surface layer by ion exchange.
CONSTITUTION: By spraying a treating liq. on the surface of glass of a temp. from the strain point to the softening point in the form of mist, the glass is physically tempered by rapid cooling. The treating liq. is a soln. or a suspension contg. a salt of an alkali metal having an ionic radius larger than that of an alkali metal contained in a surface layer of the glass. The salt includes tripotassium phosphate and potassium orthohydrogenphosphate. At the same time, the alkali metal in the surface layer is ion exchanged for the alkali metal in the liq. to form a compressive stress layer in the surface layer. Thus, the strength of the glass is enhanced.
