Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the strength of a glass article by introducing copper into the glass surface by ion exchange at a high temp. to form a glass layer of low expansion and producing compressive stress in the surface layer at the time of cooling.
CONSTITUTION: Glass contg. alkali oxide, B2O3, Al2O3 and SiO2 as principal components is formed into an article of desired shape. This article is dipped in copper- contg. salt or a mixture of the salt at a high temp. to form a copper-contg. layer of low expansion on the surface of the article by ion exchange. As a result, compressive stress is produced in the surface layer to increase the strength of the article.
