Abstract

PURPOSE: To uniformly color soda lime silica glass blue by dipping the glass in a copper salt melt of a high temp. to carry out ion exchange followed by reheating in air.
CONSTITUTION: Soda lime silica glass contg., by wt., Na2O 10W30%, CaO 5W 20%, MgO 5W20% and SiO2 50W80% is dipped in a melt of a copper salt such as CuCl or CuSO4 of 400W750°C to ion exchange Na ions in a surface layer of the glass for Cu ions, thereby coloring the glass green. This glass is then reheated to 500W750°C in air to convert the Cu ions in the glass surface layer into mono- and divalent Cu ions, thus coloring the glass blue.
