CONSTITUTION: Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass, Li2O-Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass, Na2O-K2O- Al2O3-SiO2 glass or Li2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass as alkali oxide- Al2O3-SiO2 glass is tempered as follows: it is dipped in a copper salt such as CuCl heated to a high temp. to substitute copper ions for part or all of alkali ions in the glass, thus giving tempered glass whose tensile strength is, e.g., more than twice as high as that of unexchanged glass.
