PURPOSE:To manufacture a porous SiO2 glass body contg. a little Al2O3 and having high porosity by molding molten R2O-Al2O3-P2O5-SiO2 glass having a specified composition, heat treating the molding to cause phase separation, and carrying out leaching with hot water or a hot dil. acid. CONSTITUTION:Said molten glass having a composition consisting of, by wt., 25- 75% SiO2, 2-20% Al2O3, 3-30% P2O5 and 5-20% R2O (R is Li, Na, K or Cs) is prepared so as to adjust the molar ratio of Al2O3/P2O5 to 1/0.8-1/1.2 and that of R2O/(SiO2+1/2Al2O3+P2O5) to 0.05-0.20. The glass is melted in a crucible, molded into the desired shape, and heat-treated at 500-600 deg.C to cause phase separation.
