Abstract

In the production of platinum-free glass melt, particularly for laser glass, the glass batch is fired in a platinum-lined furnace in a nitrogen atmosphere. The batch is first reacted in a ceramic lined furnace to remove carbon, nitrogen or water when present, the melted batch then being poured through a surrounding chamber into the platinum-lined furnace, the chamber being already cleared of oxygen and the nitrogen atmosphere maintained throughout firing, which may be assisted by platinum-plated stirring means for removing striae and bubbles. The laser glass may then be drawn out into a rod or cast into a rod-shaped mould. A laser glass composition is given in weight percentages: SiO2, 67.1; Na2O, 7.2; K2O, 10.9; BaO, 4.8; Sb2O3, 1.0; Al2O3, 1.5; ZnO, 1.5; Nd2O3, 5.0; Li2O, 1.0.
