Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture porous glass having large pore volume by heat treating CaO-B2O3-SiO2-Al2O3 matrix glass having a specified composition contg. a relatively large amount of Al2O3 under specified conditions and by carrying out acid and alkali treatments.
CONSTITUTION: Starting materials forming a composition consisting of, by wt., 8W25% CaO, 8W30% B2O3, 45W70% SiO2 and 5W15% Al2O3 are calcined at about 1,100°C in a crucible, and the temp. is raised to about 1,350W1,500°C. After the passage of about 4hr, the resulting melt is quenched by charging into iced water to obtain matrix glass. The glass is heat treated at 600W800°C uniform temp. for 2W48hr. By this heat treatment phase separated clouded glass having a 2-phase structure is obtd. This glass is then treated with 0.5W2N hydrochloric acid at 70W90°C to extract the acid soluble component, and it is treated with 0.01W0.05N NaOH at ≤30°C ordinary temp. to remove the residual silica gel. Thus, porous glass having large pore volume is obtd.
