PURPOSE: To enhance the utilization efficiency of caustic alkali by producing and removing phosphate from alkali phosphate obtd. by treating ore contg. rate earth element phosphate with caustic alkali and by circulating and using the residual caustic alkali.
CONSTITUTION: Ore contd. rare earth element phosphate is treated with an aqueous caustic alkali soln. having 30W50wt% concn. at 140W200°C to decompose the phosphate into rare earth element hydroxide and alkali phosphate, and after adding hot water, the solid rare earth element hydroxide is separated by filtration and taken out. To the filtered aqueous soln. contg. alkali phosphate is added 3W14 times as much Ca or Mg hydroxide as alkali phosphate by mole, and they are heated to 50W100°C to convert the alkali phosphate into Ca or Mg phosphate and caustic alkali. The solid Ca or Mg phosphate is separated, and the resulting aqueous caustic alkali soln. is circulated and used to decompose ore.
