Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a glass composition for a filament comparable to E-glass in spite of the low B2O3 content and capable of reducing the occurrence of fiber breakage during spinning by specifying the percentage of each of SiO2, B2O3, Al2O3, CaO, ZnO and R2O as essential components.
CONSTITUTION: This glass composition for a filament contains, by wt., 53W59% SiO2, 2W7% B2O3, 10W17% Al2O3, 21W24.5% CaO+MgO (0W4% MgO), 0.2W3% ZnO+BaO (ZnO≥BaO), 0W2% TiO2, 0.2W1% Na2O+K2O, ≤0.6% Fe2O, ≤0.8% F and ≤0.5% ZrO2. SiO2, B2O3, Al2O3, CaO, ZnO and R2O are contained as essen tial components. The B2O3 cintent of this composition is made as low as possible while satisfying the meltability, water resistance, etc. The occurrence rate of fiber breakage especially during spinning is low, and the composition has chatacteristics enabling enhanced productivity, etc.
