Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a glass composition containing specific amounts of SiO2, Al2O3, ZnO, MgO, Li2O, and K2O as main components and suitable for making refractive index gradient.
CONSTITUTION: A glass composition contining, as main components, 52W75wt% of SiO2, 0W17% of Al2O3 (SiO2+Al2O3 is 52W75%), 5W25% of ZnO, 0W10% of MgO, (ZnO+MgO is 5W25%), 3W15% of Li2O, 0W20% of Na2O, and 0W20% of K2O (Li2O+Na2O+K2O is 10W25%). The composition also contains as stabilizing additives, 0W3wt% of P2O5, 0W4% of ZrO2, 0W5% of SnO2, 0W4% of TiO2, 0W5% of B2O3, 0W4% of La2O3, 0W3% of Ta2O3, 0W2% of As2O3, 0W2% of Sb2O3, 0W5% of CaO, 0W15% of BaO, 0W10% of Sro, 0W5% of PbO, and 0W5% of Cs2O. An optical element having refractive index gradient can be prepared from the composition by ion exchange method.
