Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the mechanical strength and chemical durability of a glass surface by performing ion exchange and dealkalization reaction of matrix glass in one heat treatment process using a chemical agent which reacts with an alkali component.
CONSTITUTION: The mechanical strength and chemical durability of a glass surface are enhanced by performing ion exchange and dealkalization reaction of matrix glass in one heat treatment process using a chemical agent which is based on a potassium salt capable of ion exchanging sodium ion in a glass surface layer for potassium ion at a temp. of the strain point of the glass or below and reacts with an alkali component on the glass surface. After the surface treatment the glass is cooled and washed. The washed glass surface may be coated with a smoothening coating agent such as a paraffinic agent or fatty acid or closely covered with a plastic film to enhance the smoothness and wear resistance of the surface.
