Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a heat transmitting surface for an aluminum-made heat exchanging pipe suitable for both evaporation and condensation by immersing an aluminum member in a treating liquid containing a salt or salts of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, in a method of forming a heat transmitting surface for heat exchangers.
CONSTITUTION: An aluminum member is immersed in a treating liquid containing one or more salts of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, at a temperature higher than 40°C and at pH of 6W13 or higher, to form a conversion coating on the surface of the aluminum member. As the salt or salts in the treating liquid, halogenides, sulfates, nitrates, carbonates or the like are generally used. By such a treatment, the surface of the aluminum member is roughened, the heat transmitting area is increased and a heat transmitting surface suitable for both evaporation and condensation is obtained.
