Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a temperature glass vessel at a low cost, by quenching the inner and the outer surface of a hot glass vessel thereby forming layers having compressive stress, and contacting the surface with an alkali metal salt to effect the ion exchange.
CONSTITUTION: The inner and outer surface of a hot glass vessel just removed from the molding machine is quenched to 0W180°C at a cooling rate of 10W35°C/sec by air glast. The compressive layers having compressive stress of 100W750kg/cm2 are formed to the surface of the glass vessel by this quenching treatment. The surface of the quenched glass vessel is sprayed with an aqueous solution of potassium salt such as potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, etc., dried and heat-treated at 0W180°C to effect the ion exchange. By this treatment, the compressive stress is increased to 1,000W5,000kg/cm2. If necessary, the glass vessel is coated with a metal oxide prior to the heat treatment, or coated with a protective organic film such as fatty acid, surface active agent, resin, etc. after the heat treatment.
