Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the rate of ion exchange reaction by which glass is tempered by contact with a melt contg. molten K salt at a slow cooling temp. of the glass or below by adding molten Sn salt to the melt.
CONSTITUTION: Glass is brought into contact with a melt contg. molten K salt at a slow cooling temp. of the glass or below to ion exchange Na ions in a surface layer of the glass for K ions in the melt, whereby the glass is tempered. At this time, by adding molten Sn salt to the melt preferably in an Sn/Kwt. ratio of ≤3% and dipping the glass in the melt bath adjusted to about 300W470°C, the rate of the ion exchange reaction is increased. The molten Sn salt includes molten stannous oxalate, stannous acetate, potassium stannate, tin chloride, tin iodide, tin bromide and tin fluoride.
