Abstract

1323648 Colouring and strengthening glass SAINT-GOBAIN 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 21899/71 Heading C1M A process for colouring and strengthening glass e.g. window glass containing alkali metal ions comprises the stops of immersing the glass in a first bath of a molten salt containing silver ions at a temperature to ensure penetration of silver ions into the glass and then immersing the glass in a second bath of a molten salt containing alkali metal ions, e.g. potassium ions, which are larger than the alkali metal ions already in the glass, at a temperature sufficient to ensure the penetration of metal ions into the glass but below the transformation temperature of the glass. The silver ions are reduced to colloidal silver particles by the alkali metal ions in the second bath which also provide the strengthening of the glass. The temperature of the first bath is preferably in the range 300‹ to 450‹ C. and the period of immersion does not exceed one hour. The first bath preferably contains 1À5% by weight silver nitrate the remainder being sodium or potassium nitrate.
