Abstract
In a hot glassworking process, a vitreous substance comprising B2O3 is interposed between the hot glass and a mechanical part. The vitreous substance may be applied, e.g. (a) by rubbing a block of the substance against the part; (b) by spraying the powdered substance; or (c) by use of the molten substance, e.g. by spraying, film-coating or immersion. The coating may be a few microns thick. The part may be, e.g. a mould, or a roller, which may be striated or roughened; the part may be made of e.g. stainless steel, graphite or refractory. The viscosity of the glass should be at least 1000 times that of the substance. Exemplified compositions of the substance are (a) 90 mol B2O3 and 10 mol alkali metal oxide, e.g. Na2O or K2O; (b) by weight, SiO2, 16.8%; B2O3, 9.45%; PbO, 72.2%; Al7O3, 1.15%; and (c) B2O3 and 5-15% by weight of graphite, as a frit. Some of the vitreous substance may diffuse into the surface of the glass being worked.
