Abstract
In a process for treating a surface of a glass article the surface is exposed to a hot flame to cause selective vaporization of the more volatile constituents of a thin surface layer of the article. The process is exemplified with reference to a borosilicate glass plate one surface of which was exposed to a plasma flame having a temperature of 25,000 DEG K. at the cathode, the flame being 50 mm. in length and 8 mm. in diameter. The vaporization products comprised alkali metal borates. The glass had the composition in weight per cent SiO2 80%, B2O3 10%, Al2O3 5%, Na2O 5%.
