Abstract

The subject matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 1,090,310 except that the aqueous alkaline cleaning solution contains silicate e.g. sodium or potassium o- or m-silicate, and has such a high pH, e.g. at least 10.5, that inhibition of subsequent coating does not occur; the cleaning solution is maintained at the high pH by replenishment of an alkaline compound, preferably NaOH. The cleaning solution may also contain alkali metal carbonate, borate or phosphate, including Na2HPO4-Ti compound prepared in accordance with U.S. Specification 2,874,081. The treatment may be applied to articles having both surfaces of zinc or zinc alloy and aluminium, iron or steel.
