Abstract

A phosphate coating is formed on a metal surface by cleaning the surface with an alkali cleaning solution, treating it with a solution of one or more condensed-phosphates which has a pH of at least 7 and finally treating it with a phosphate coating solution, the difference in pH between the condensed-phosphate solution and the phosphate coating solution being not more than 6.5 The cleaning solution may be based on soda lye, soda, metasilicates, water glass, trisodium phosphate and orthosilicates; two aqueous solutions given by way of example contain a non-ionic emulsifying agent, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide together with (a) trisodium phosphate, and (b) sodium disilicate. The condensed phosphate may be a pyrophosphate, e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate, or a tripolyphosphate, and the solution thereof may also contain titanium, tin or zirconium, preferably as phosphates; disodium phosphate; a wetting agent or emulsifying agent, e.g. an epoxy alcohol, amine, amide or alkyl phenol; and a flotation agent such as pine oil. The exemplified phosphate coating solution contains zinc phosphate and nitrate. Metals which may be coated include iron, steel, aluminium, zinc and cadmium.
