Abstract
937,210. Crucibles. FOSECO TRADING A.G. May 2, 1962 [March 16, 1961], No. 9723/61. Class 82. An apparatus for the production of small castings comprises a container 1 made of an exothermic mixture containing a refractory filler which provides sufficient heat to melt the solid metal, e.g. aluminium, within said container 1, and after burning leaves a coherent heat insulating container for the molten metal so obtained. The container 1 is placed inside an outer metal housing 4 having vents 5 which allow the circulation of air, and sleeve 7 so that a lifting handle may be inserted for pouring. The exothermic mixture comprises a refractory filler e.g. sand or grog, powdered aluminium and an oxidizing agent therefor (e.g. alkali metal nitrate or chlorate and/or iron oxide or manganese dioxide), and preferably a small amount, e.g. 0.1-10% of its weight, of a fluoride, e.g. Aluminium (finely divided) - 45% Sodium nitrate- - - 2% Iron oxide or manganese dioxide 15% Cryolite - - - - 3% Sand - - - - 30% Binder - - - - 5%. The above composition may also be used as a lining for a crucible instead of being the crucible itself.
