Abstract

The head of a casting- or ingot-mould is lined with a composition including a refractory material, at least one oxidisable material selected from Al, Mg, Si, alloys of these, coke and charcoal and constituting 2,5-12% of the composition and at least one oxidising agent selected from alkali metal nitrates and chlorates, iron oxide and manganese dioxide and constituting 1-40% of the composition, the relative quantities being selected so that the heat generated by the reaction between the oxidisable substance and the oxidising agent is sufficient to provide only 20-75% of the heat required to raise the composition to the temperature of the metal being cast. The refractory material may be sand, grog or furnace aggregate and 0,5-10% of a fluoride may be included in the composition. The composition may be used as a lining per se or may be used as a backing for a stronger exothermic composition. Specifications 627,678, 785,984 and 805,823 are referred to.
