Abstract

Exothermic material for use in the casting of metals contains aluminium and oxide of a metal such as iron or manganese or other oxide which is capable of being reduced under the conditions of use, together with a powerful oxidizing agent and a fluoride, the fluoride being present in a proportion between 12.5 and 25 per cent of the material and the material having a relatively low ignition temperature not exceeding 600 DEG C. The powerful oxidizing agent may consist of a chlorate and/or nitrate and may be present in a proportion exceeding 7 per cent but preferably not exceeding 15 per cent. The material may consist of aluminium 20-55 per cent, metallic oxide 5-35 per cent, fluoride salt such as fluorspar, fluoral, cryolite, sodium or potassium fluoride 12.5-25 per cent, a powerful oxidizing agent 7.0-15.0 per cent, inorganic binder such as bentonite up to 5 per cent, organic or other carbonaceous matter optional up to 10 per cent and refractory such as graded silica sand or broken firebrick the remainder if any.
