Abstract

An electrode for hot welding spherulitic cast iron includes a cast iron or mild steel core covered by a coating, preferably of basic flux forming constitution, into which has been incorporated Mg alloy, e.g. Ni-Mg-Ce, Fe-Si-Mg or Ni-Mg, in the proportion of between 1% and 8% of the dry weight of the coating excluding binding material. The coating may have the composition by weight of 10-25% free carbon, 0-15% cast iron powder, 25-60% basic components such as alkaline earth metal carbonates, 7-25% fluospar, 5-10% nickel powder, 5-35% deoxidizers, 5-12% silicon and 1-5% magnesium (as alloy), remainder alloying elements e.g. Fe and Co, and slag components e.g. bentonite, feldspars, cryolite, quartz and kaolin. A specific coating mixture is 4% Fe-Al, 10% Fe-Si, 20% graphite, 12% SrCO3, 20% BaCO3, 6% CaCO3, 11% CaF2, 4% Fe-Si-Mg, 9% Ni-Mg and 4% cast iron powder, with Na and/or K silicate binders. Carbides, e.g. of Mn, are preferably less than 0.6%.
