Abstract

An electrode for hot welding cast iron has a mild steel core covered by a flux forming coating containing 10 to 25% free carbon and 4 to 10% silicon as pre-alloy e.g. ferrosilicon; at least 1% of the total carbon in the coating is in the form of powdered cast iron. The coating may have the following composition by weight: free carbon e.g. graphite and charcoal powder and/or lamp-black 10-25% cast iron powder 3-15%, nickel powder 0-7%, deoxidizers e.g. Fe-Al, Fe-Si-Mg 7-25%, Si as pre-alloy 4-10%, Alkaline-earth metal carbonates e.g. of Ca, Sr or Ba 30-60%, CaF2 (fluorspar) 7-25%, the remainder being alloying elements such as Fe, Co, Cr, Mo, and slag components such as bentonite, cryolite, quartz, feldspars, kaolin. Na and for K silicates may be added as binders.
