Abstract

A continuous electrode for use in flux submerged or gas shielded arc welding consists of a tubular ferrous metal casing having a core material that is non-hygroscopic and is free from hydrogen. The core may contain fluxing agents such as metal fluorides, e.g., calcium, magnesium or barium fluoride or cryolite, metal carbonates, e.g., calcium carbonate, dolomite or magnesium carbonate, titanium oxide, iron and manganese oxides, silicates, deoxidizing or alloying agents, e.g. ferro-alloys of manganese, silicon, titanium or chromium, and filler materials, e.g. powdered iron. A core composition is:- .20-60%.calcium fluoride .0-40%.mineral silicate .0-20%.titanium oxide .0-60%.calcium carbonate .0-20%.iron oxide .0-20%.ferro-manganese .0-20%.ferro-silicon .0-20%.ferro-titanium .0-70%.iron powder The iron oxide and titanium oxide may be in combination, e.g as ilmenite and the calcium carbonate and fluoride may be replaced by the corresponding salts of other metals. An alternative core composition is:- .20-70%.titanium oxide .0-30%.calcium fluoride .0-20%.calcium carbonate .0-20%.mineral silicate .0-20%.ferro-manganese .0-20%.ferro-silicon .0-20%.ferro-titanium .0-70%.iron powder
