Abstract

Refractory masses containing chromium ore are obtained by first wetting or coating grains of the ore with silica and then with an alkaline earth metal oxide. Progenitors can be used instead of the oxides. The mol ratio of alkaline earth-metal oxide to silica is preferably 2 to 1 but an excess of the oxide can be allowed. Magnesium is included as an alkaline earth metal. The finest grains are preferably removed before the ore is treated, but this finest portion, as it contains the majority of any gangue present, can act as a flux when e.g. magnesite or corundum is added to the coarse grains of ore, but not more than 30%-relative to the total weight of additive and finest grains-is used. When the grains are wetted, waterglass, or an organic silicate, e.g. a silicone solution is used.
