Abstract

A body comprising at least 50% by weight of tantalum or niobium is provided with a metallic oxide protective coating consisting of (% by weight) (a) silicon 30 to 50, (b) vanadium or manganese 5 to 25 or both totalling 10 to 25, and (c) at least three of the following tantalum 5 to 50, niobium 5 to 50, tungsten 3 to 25, molybdenum 3 to 25, chromium 3 to 25, titanium 3 to 25, zirconium 3 to 25, aluminium 3 to 25, boron 3 to 15. The coating may be applied by hot (flame or plasma arc) or cold spraying or as a slurry, and then heating to fuse and oxidize the coating, alternatively the metals may be diffused into the body by packing the body in the powdered metals together with potassium fluoride and heating. Before coating, titanium may be diffused into the surface of the body.ALSO:A body comprising at least 50% by weight of tantalum or niobium is provided with a metallic oxide protective coating consisting of (% by weight) (a) silicon 30 to 50, (b) vanadium or manganese 5 to 25 or both totalling 10 to 25, and (c) at least three of the following tantalum 5 to 50, niobium 5 to 50, tungsten 3 to 25, molybdenum 3 to 25, chromium 3 to 25, titanium 2 to 25, zirconium 3 to 25, aluminium 3 to 25, boron 3 to 15. The coating may be applied by hot (flame or plasma arc) or cold spraying or as a slurry, and then heating to fuse and oxidize the coating, alternatively the metals may be diffused into the body by packing the body in the powdered metals together with potassium fluoride and heating. Before coaing, titanium may be diffused into the surface of the body.
