Abstract
An article, e.g. a cooking utensile, comprising a ferrous metal substrate, e.g. cast iron, carbon or low alloy steel such as containing Cr, Nb, V, Ti and Zr, has thereon a diffusion coating of a ferritic alloy consisting of at least 12% Cr, 0.05 to 4% Al, 0 to 6% Ni, balance Fe except for small amounts of metal transfer agent and impurities, in the top 0.3 mil of the coating. The thickness of the coating may be 0.5 to 5 mils. For preparing, the substrate is contacted at between 800 DEG C. and its melting-point with a metal transfer agent which is Ca, Ba, Sr and/or Mg and contains as diffusing elements at least sufficient Cr to form a saturated solution in the transfer agent, e.g. at least 0.25% Cr, 0.075 to 3% Al and 0 to 6% Ni, based on the weight of the transfer agent.
