To prevent nitrogen absorption into a chromium layer on a metal member, it is coated with e.g. Ni, Co or Fe, and then annealed in a neutral atmosphere e.g. hydrogen or argon, at a temperature above 1000‹C. until the depth of diffusion of the chromium in the metal surface layer is at least 0À01 mm. The surface layer can be applied by spraying or electro-plating.
