Abstract

1,248,733. Coating with metals. C.A.V. Ltd. Oct.21, 1968 [Nov.7, 1967], No.50564/67. Heading C7F. A metal substrate of e.g. steel is provided with a hard facing by placing on its surface a mixture of carbon and the oxides of alloy components e.g. Ni, Mo, Cr, V, and W, and then heating to melt the components and reduce the oxides. The substrate may be provided with a groove to give a thick layer. The heating may take place in a vacuum or neutral or reducing atmosphere. To improve adhesion the components may include iron powder, and the article may be oil quenched at 800 to 900‹C.
