Abstract

A method of producing on ferrous metal containing a total of not more than 2% of Ni, Mn, Cn, Cr, Si, V, W, Al, Ti, and metals having a high affinity for nitrogen a coating resistant to corrosion by liquid Bi or Hg comprises nitriding or carburising the surface, then contacting the surface with liquid Bi or Hg, to which has been added Zr or Ti, at a temperature above 450 DEG C. to produce on the surface a coating of Zr or Ti nitride or carbide. A coating of Ti carbide or nitride will also give protection against corrosion by Pb. Mg may also be added to the liquid Bi, Hg or Pb to act as a deoxidant. The ferrous metal may be a steel containing 1% Cr and 0,5% Mo.
