Abstract
577,504. Coating metals. SAMUEL, R.-L., LOCKINGTON, N. A., and METALS INTERCHANGE SYNDICATE, Ltd. May 3, 1944, No. 8390. [Class 82 (ii)] In a process for the diffusion of metals into iron or steel, the iron or steel is heated to a temperature between 200‹ C. and its melting point in the presence of one or more of the metals Cr, Mo, W, Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb, Si, Al, Mn, Ni, Co, and Cu or their alloys in an atmosphere comprising a mixture of the vapour of an organic halide or hydrohalide and an oxidising gas or vapour which does not react with the iron or steel at the reaction temperature except by oxidation, carburisation or decarburisation. The atmosphere may be prepared by passing air or oxygen through a volatile organic halide, for example, carbon tetrachloride, ethylchloride, chloroform, trichlorethylene, monochlor- and dichlor-benzene, the hydrohalides of monodi- and tri-methylamine or urea hydrochloride. The diffusing metal which may be the metal itself, a ferro alloy or a non-ferrous alloy of the metal, may be in contact with the iron or steel or in a separate reaction chamber. Fifteen examples of the process are given using various diffusing metals, atmospheres and optimum temperatures.
