Abstract

A flesh coating of metal is formed on a metallic base by thermal decomposition of a gaseous compound, the flesh coated member is heated to a temperature sufficient to eliminate gases from the coating, and the member is then subjected to further plating by a similar process. The base may be of Cu, Al, Pb, cast iron, alloy steel, low carbon steel, bronze, brass or Mg; the compound may be a carbonyl of Ni, Fe, Cr, W, Co, Mo or Re and treatment may be effected in an atmosphere of H2, CO2, CO, N2, natural gas or brazing furnace gas. A further heating may follow the second coating step.
