Abstract
236,033. Summers, P. F. June 17, 1924. Coating.-Articles of iron, steel, or non-ferrous metals or alloys are coated or alloyed at the surface by heating them in a closed vessel packed in a mixture of finely powdered chromium and aluminium alloy with alumina or chromic oxide, so as to produce a ternary alloy of the metal under treatment with chromium and aluminium. Both alumina and chromic oxide may be used, and small quantities of ammonium chloride, sodium chloride, or other accelerator may be added. The charge in the vessel is heated in the absence of air or in a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere of nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide &c. at a temperature not exceeding the melting point of the alloy and for a time sufficient to enable diffusion of the chromium and aluminium alloy into the metal. The receptacle is preferably rotated. In an example the metal is heated at a temperature of 950‹ C. in a mixture consisting of 25 per cent powdered chromium alloy, 70 per cent of alumina, and 5 per cent of ammonium chloride. With a higher temperature the ammonium chloride may be omitted.
