373,292. Heat-treating metal articles. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Kelley, F. C.; 1116, Van Curler Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 26, 1931, No. 6094. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1930. [Class 72.] In a process for heat-treating alloy steel articles which have first heated in a non- oxidizing or reducing atmosphere, hot rolled, pickled and cold rolled, the articles 4 are placed in a sealed tube 3 which is contained in a larger tube 7 sealed by caps 9 and containing a powdered material 8 comprising an active material such as chromium, manganese, silicon or ferrosilicon which may be mixed with an inert material such as aluminium oxide. The tube 7 is then placed in an electric or other furnace 2 and heated to 1100‹ C. a non-oxidizing gas, such as hydrogen, being passed through the furnace. The non-oxidizing gas passes through the material 8 the active part of which combines with any oxygen or water vapour in the furnace. An example of the material 8 comprises 15 per cent of manganese or ferrosilicon and 85 per cent of aluminium oxide. In a modification, the articles 4 are placed in an annealing box, the cover of which is provided with a seal containing the material 8.
