Abstract
Wire for grids of electric discharge apparatus is formed of an alloy containing 2.5-4.0 per cent Al, 2.5-20 per cent of Cr and/or Ti, the Ti proportion not exceeding 7.5 per cent, and the balance substantially pure Ni or Ni and Co, the proportion of Co not exceeding 20 per cent of the said balance, in which alloy the Al proportion is not greater than 5 per cent when the Ti is greater than 2.5 per cent. The wire, after the wire drawing operation is strengthened by ageing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature above 300 DEG C. In an example an alloy containing 90 per cent Ni, 5 per cent Al and 5 per cent Cr is hot rolled, solution treated and quenched from about 1100 DEG C. to room temperature and then cold drawn. The drawn wire is strand annealed by passing it through a furnace at 1000 DEG C. in dry hydrogen, quenched in air and then aged at 660 DEG C. in hydrogen for 1/2 hour.
