Abstract

Magnetic iron alloys for use in the construction of electrical apparatus contain 0,1-6 per cent of silicon and 0,1-6 per cent of arsenic. The alloys may be made by adding arsenic or ferro-arsenic to molten iron or by passing a stream of arsenic hydride or arsenic vapour into molten iron, the silicon being afterwards added as such or as ferro-silicon; or an alloy or compound of arsenic, silicon, and iron may be added as the iron is being poured into the ladle. Rolled sheets of the alloy may be annealed by heating in air, a neutral atmosphere, or hydrogen, for 2-8 hours at 900-1100 DEG C. In making laminations, the sheets may be annealed for several days at 900-1100 DEG C., cooled in the furnace, punched, and re-annealed for a similar time at 700-800 DEG C.
