Abstract

Metals are coated by decomposition of gaseous metal carbonyls by a two-stage treatment, the first stage being the deposition of a thin (e.g. 0,00001-0,00025 inches) porous film, which is then gas desorbed in the range 500 DEG -1200 DEG F. depending on the base metal, and then carrying out the second coating step. Conventional cleaning is effected prior to initial coating and superficial oxides may be removed in the coating chamber by the action of a reducing gas. The desorbing heat-treatment is carried out under non-oxidising, preferably reducing, conditions. The following bases can be coated: copper, aluminium, lead, cast-iron, alloy steels, low-carbon steels, magnesium bronze, brass and "Monel" metal (R.T.M.). The coating metals specified are: chromium, nickel, iron, tungsten, cobalt, molybdenum, tellurium and rhenium. The coated product may be heat treated to improve its physical properties. Nickel-coated copper is heated for 15 minutes at 800 DEG -900 DEG F. in an atmosphere of natural gas to increase ductility.
